When To Replace Your Home’s AC Unit

How can you tell whether repairing your AC unit is a viable option? If you choose not to replace, will you find yourself sweating through the sheets during our next hot spell? Prescott Air Conditioning can help you determine whether to repair or replace your Prescott home’s air conditioner.

Replace an air conditioner if it is over 15-years old.
An air conditioner has a typical lifespan of around 10-15 years. At some point your unit will start to break down more frequently. If you just had it serviced last year and it’s broken again, or if you replaced one part and now another one needs replacing, it’s time to consider getting a new unit.

Replace an air conditioner if the repair cost is too high.
The easiest way to make that decision is, believe it or not, math. In plain English, if the cost to repair is equal to or greater than the cost to replace, it’s time to replace it.

Replace your air conditioner when it has trouble keeping up.
Air conditioners, like all machines, lose efficiency over time and might need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. Another reason might be that even though the AC is in good shape, it’s the wrong size for your needs. Is it running all the time to keep up? Do some rooms feel hot no matter what you set your thermostat to or how long it runs? If you answered yes, it may be time for a new air conditioner.

Repair your air conditioner if it is less than 10-years old.
This is a general rule when it comes to figuring out whether it’s time to repair or replace your air conditioner. There may be exceptions but pursue repairing it first.

At Prescott Air Conditioning, we believe in repairing rather than replacing your air conditioner. Does your AC unit need service? We repair over 95% of broken units!
